The Hate U Give book summary :

Star Carter is a 16-year-old African-American girl who lives in a predominantly black community in Garden Heights but attends Williamson School, a predominantly white private school.

Starr was taken home after his childhood best friend Khalil shot him at a party. On their way home, a police officer stopped them because they did not signal to change lanes. Police give Khalil an order and Corey goes downstairs through the window and stops singing. Corio disagrees with the officer, who instructs him to get out of the car.

Outside the car, police return Cleor's driving license and instruct him to put his hand on the roof, while police return to the car to check his ID. Cleo leaned over the car window to check on Starr, then reached for the driver's side to pick up the hairbrush.

Police believe Corio was trying to fire a gun, so they shot and killed Corio. When Starr goes to Cleo and cries for the police, the police realize she's holding a comb, not a gun. Cleor's murder made national news. Starr's identity as a witness was initially kept secret from everyone except Starr's family.

The star's involvement in the murder was unknown to all of her best friend Maya, Haley and her boyfriend, Williamson Prep's students. She had to keep it a secret, but it put Starr under enough pressure to separate her role from her role at home to Williamson's school.

Encouraged by civil rights attorney April Offer, Starr agreed to testify in a television interview and in front of a grand jury. While defending his character in his interview, Corio's identity is kept secret, but a mob boss, King, who calls himself Star King Lords, sees who he is.

The gang took control of her neighbors and forced Star and her family to move into her mother's brother Uncle Carlos' house, threatening not to talk about Kim's relationship with Kim. Carlos Starr had a father figure when his father Maverick was jailed for three years for a crime he did not commit.

After his release, Carlos left the gang to become a grocer in Garden Heights, working for Starr and his honest brother Simon. King Carlos is let go because the false confession of his crime saves the gang leader Raja from prison. Kim, who is well known in the neighborhood, now lives with Shimen's mother and Shimen's honest sister Kenya, who is a friend of the star.

Peaceful protests and riots broke out in Garden Heights after a jury officer was not charged. Opposing the decision, Star became less and less likely to hide himself as a witness, including speaking out during the protests and clashing with police in riot gear during the protests.

Her growing acquaintance with the people of Garden Heights has led to strained relationships with Star's school friends, especially her boyfriend Chris and friends. Starr and Maya eventually object to Haley's racist remarks, while Chris still supports Starr.

During a protest, Star and Shimen were trapped in Carlos's grocery store, where the king and his party hurled petrol bombs. Starr's father Carlos immediately came and rescued the two. After rescuing the two, Carlos and Kim get into a fight.

When police arrived, Sekani pointed a gun at them, and they shouted for it to be pulled out. In the end, Star resolves the situation. The community came out against what King did, Kim ended up in prison, and Starr finally promised to keep Kelly's consciousness alive forever and continue to advocate against police violence "by any means."
