Haruhi Suzumiya Series book summary

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yūutsu centers on the life of high school student Haruhi Suzumiya and those who are involved in her madness. Although Haruhi is the central character, the story is told from the point of view of Kyon, one of her classmates.

Kyon is a high school student who recently outgrew his fantasies of espers, time travelers, and aliens, along with high school. However, when he chooses to talk to an eccentric girl named Haruhi Suzumiya on the first day of school, he inadvertently sets off a chain of events that leads him into completely different situations from the real world.

Haruhi searches among all the clubs in the school for one that interests her, but in them she only finds dissatisfaction, despite being good at practically any task she sets out to do. Kyon makes a malicious comment about her actions and accidentally gives Haruhi the idea to start a club herself.

Haruhi forcibly recruits Kyon to help her found the club, which she calls the SOS Brigade (SOS stands for "Sekai wo Ooini moriagerutame no Suzumiya Haruhi no Dan", which means something like "Save the world with an overdose of fun :

Suzumiya Haruhi's Brigade"), although he is only interested in protecting other helpless victims of Haruhi's "voluntary arrests". As the story progresses, it is revealed that each of these supposed "helpless victims" has a reason for being there.
