14-year-old girl Lucy Snow visits her godmother in the town of Bretton. In this house, fate brings her together with two amazing people - Graham Bretton, the son of her godmother, and Polina Home, a serious petite girl.

When Lucy grows up, she leaves for Brussels to work as a teacher at a boarding school. Later, she meets grown-up childhood friends Graham and Polina. At first, Lucy corresponds with Graham and establishes tender, friendly relations with him, but Graham, having met Polina again, already an adult and charming girl, decides to marry her.

 Lucy forces herself not to impose herself on Graham, but to leave their rare conversations as they are, and falls in love with another teacher, much older than her, Paul Emanuel, although at first he seemed to her a harsh and unattractive "short man".  he takes her by surprise, preparing a rented building for a school and leaving the country for several years. However, on the way home, his ship is in distress and he is killed.
